Whether you have come for a family vacation or you have set your sights on a romantic weekend getaway, or you’re out with the boys’ for a week of fishing, there is something for you in West Nipissing.

Did you bring your golf bag? Good, because we have 27 holes of great golfing in West Nipissing,

18 of them at Laurentide Golf Club just east of Sturgeon Falls, and the other 9 holes in Verner at the Municipal Golf Course. Both courses have great clubhouses. Laurentide also offers a very well equipped pro-shop and golf cart rentals.

How do you like your berries? In West Nipissing we enjoy one of the finest run pick-your-own berry farms in the entire province. Located right on the Sturgeon River, Leisure Farms cultivates strawberries, raspberries, corn and pumpkins. Pickers are taken out by wagon to prime picking locations, and it’s an outing enjoyed by people far and wide. This operation is extremely well run, beautiful, clean, family-oriented, with a bakery, picnic tables and smiles that never stop.

And in West Nipissing people really enjoy their berries. In July, the town of Sturgeon Falls and Leisure Farms join forces to celebrate the Annual Strawberry Festival, with recipe contests, decorations in town, sidewalk sales, face-painting, clowns and more.

Blueberries are also a hot item in West Nipissing. For the hiker who takes to the bush with a container in hand, they are likely to be well rewarded with wild-blueberry pancakes, wild-blueberry muffins, and wild-blueberry pie.

The human history of the area, of course, dates back into the mists of time, with the Nipissing Ojibway people. The local history has been captured for all time at the Museum, Sturgeon River House Museum, located on Leblanc Road. Re-constructed on the site of the former Hudson Bay Company post, the museum houses an impressive collection of various objects, with Native artifacts, furnishings from the turn of the century, old machinery, logging and farming equipment, and all the accoutrements of the fur trade. The fur trade collection, purchased several years ago, is intended for a special Trappers. Museum, and contains everything from the historic tools of the trade to specimens of fur-bearing animals. There is also working blacksmith’s shop on site, a gift shop which sells locally hand-crafted items, a canteen and picnic area, a boat launch and an open-air theatre.

A Interpretation / Information Centre is on Highway 17 in Sturgeon Falls. This Centre provides a one-stop shop for all tourists traveling through the area. It will be a hub-style focal point highlighting all of the West Nipissing attractions and assets, both the natural and man-made.

For those who want to get caught up in some major fishing, there are several tournaments in the area. One is the Northern Pike Derby, held out of Cache Bay every year, on the third weekend of May. This tournament is very large, with major corporate sponsorship. Another tournament, held near the end of August, with the West Nipissing Chamber of Commerce and the Muse Sturgeon River House Museum, is gaining popularity as a family affair, also with major sponsorship.

rec_center_640x425Got caught in some rain? In West Nipissing we have the award-winning Sturgeon Falls Recreational Complex, with an indoor pool that’s out of this world. This fantastic recreational complex was designed so that there is something for everyone to enjoy. There’s a waterslide, a sauna, a hot tub, tarzan ropes, a children’s wading pool, a weight room and exercise room, as well as an ice rink that has summer ice. The staff offer a wide variety of programs and classes geared to all ages and all levels of activity. Inside there is a large community hall with professional stage, light and sound, which can be rented for any special event. As well, an indoor walking route has been established at the Complex for this rapidly expanding activity.

Every summer the Nipissing # 10 First Nations Band of Ojibways hold a wonderful Pow Wow. This traditional affair has drummers, singers and dancers coming from far and wide to enjoy a weekend of socializing. Everyone is more than welcome to participate in this occasion. If you enjoy the pageantry of Native costume and the rhythm of Native drums this event is a must. As well, many traders set up booths with everything from artwork to jewelry to leather goods , to clothing.

There are numerous other attractions and events in West Nipissing. We have a Doll Museum at Shuswap Camp which houses hundreds of dolls collected and dressed in hand-made costumes from around the world. The car buffs will enjoy Antique Car Shows in Sturgeon Falls, hosted by the local club. Fish Fries are held by volunteer firefighters in Lavigne. The West Nipissing Agricultural Society holds a summer fair every year in Verner, with animal and crop contests, farmer’s Olympics, craft and food displays. Once a year, in the summer, a midway comes to Sturgeon Falls, with lots of rides, games and cotton candy.
